The Orissa Youth Congress hunger strike was called off on Tuesday evening. On the sixth day of the stir six leaders including Odisha Youth Congress president Pradeep Majhi were shifted to the Capital Hospital here after their condition deterioratedThe Capital Hospital’s Causality ward was crowded with many Congress leaders and workers to inquire about their health condition. Youth Congress and PCC leaders present at the hospital said they were determined that the party reaches the masses in the State on the farmers’ tragedy.

The party alleged that the Naveen Government was paying more attention towards the industrialists than the farmers. Such a tragic situation in the State did not convince the Chief Minister to announce a better package for the farmers. The Youth Congress has decided to gherao the panchayat and district headquarters on the farmers’ grievances from Friday. The party further said while 13 farmers including a father and son committed suicide the Naveen Government to divert attention has announced to distribute free cycles and uniforms among the school going general and SC, ST students. Majhi further said the Chief Minister was diverting the Central Government Sarva Shikshya funds by providing free cycles and uniforms which is to hoodwink the people of the State. Free cycles and uniforms were earlier distributed among the SC and ST students in different projects with the Government of India funds. The State Government has failed to monitor the same, alleged Majhi.

Earlier Union Minister of State for Chemicals and Fertiliser, Srikant Jena, who visited the site, said a delegation from the OPCC will meet Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to apprise him of the condition of farmers due to unseasonal rain in Orissa.
