In an audacious act of terror, maoists have abducted Malkangiri collector R.Vineel Kumar and a junior engineer Pabitra Mohan Majhi and have given the state govt. a 48 hour deadline to ful fill their demands which they have conveyed through another junior engineer. Boththe collector and the junior engineer are believed to have been abducted while they were returning on a motorcycle from a public welfare camp at Badapada in Kudumulugumma block, over 600 km from Bhubaneswar.

Since the incident the sate govt. has stopped all search operations against the radicals and is tyring to set up a dialogue but there has been no trace of the officers till the reports are being written. Orissa Chief Minister Sri Naveen Pattnaik has appealed to the moaists through the media to young and energetic officer(Krishna) who has been doing notable work for the development of the poor and the needy in the area while also appealing for the release of Majhi.

The combing operations in the state have been stopped completely and the govt. is ready for any dialogue at the state or district level. The state govt. is also believed to have approached noted social activist Swami Agnivesh and revolutionary writer Varavara Rao to negotiate with the Red rebels.

Meanwhile the people in Malkangiri, the people observed a spontaneous bandh in an attempt to urge the radicals to free the popular collector and Majhi. This is the first time in the state that the maoists have laid their hands on a IAS officer though they had earlier abducted police officers from some other districts of the state.

In another incident of suspected maoists violence, four vehicles were burnt burnt down last night in the Ganjam district. The vehicles reportedly belong to a contractor in the region. The incident took place on the eve of Kandhamal bandh called by the CPM in protest against the killing of nine rebels by police in Rayagada district on January 9.

It is reported that around a dozen of masked men allegedly raided the camp at Borada within Baragada police limits and set three vehicles afire. Similarly, they also allegedly set another vehicle on fire at Rangagudi near the camp. The extremists took away a motorcycle from the camp.

The miscreants are also reported to have pasted two posters on the spot which warn the contractor to stop using machines to to construction work and use the man power of the area and also give them adequate wages. But the police have not yet confirmed the deed as that of the maoists and have revealed that investigation is on in the area and they have detained some locals of the area for investigation.

The inciedent meanwhile has caused major problems to the normalcy of the area. The movement of traffic has been disrupted from Berhampur to Daringibadi and Bramhnaigaon as the extrimists have blocked the road by cutting trees near Gajalabadi village. All the shops in Daringibadi and Bramhanigaon have also shut down completely thus making daily life more difficult in the area in wake of the Bandh called by the maoists.

It was around 1 o’ clock in the night when the Police outpast inside SCB Medical College got an unanymous call threatening to blow the outpost within three years. Such a call on a chilly winter night was set to take sleep ogg the faces of the police officials for sure. After all only recently the police had arrested two suspected injured maoists from the SCB campus and has currently kept them under treatment in an undisclosed hospital.

So all the top officials of the police dept. were immediately alarmed . Several platoons of armed police force were immediately summoned to the area and the entire outpost was turned into a bunker within matter of minutes. However the entire night passed and nothing any where close to an explosion happened. The only outcome was that the commisionerate police was left gasping after their ruined sleep due to the late night call.

Later officials of the police dept. cleared that while they anticipated the call to be a prank right from the beginning, but they idi not wanted to take a chance and so took the necessary back-up actions. But as it turned out the entire incident was only a fuss.

Nevertheless the police has increased the security in and around the SCB given the current scenario concerning the Maoists and the police does not want to leave anything to chances. While such prank calls to the police are not new but the police are considering using phone tracking devices to trace such troubling calls.

The maoists in Odisha have called for a two day Bandh in Gajapati, Rayagarh and Kandhamal districts to protest against the rising police atrocities, as well as the fake encounter in Paikamal and the Operation Greenhunt by the state govt. However they have adopted a violent way as usual to show their dissent and have burnt down two mobile towers in Aliganda, Gajapatii during late night yesterday. 15 to 20 maoists from the CPI(M) group are believed to have been behind the incident.

They have also closed the roads connecting the three districts to outside world by putting trees on the roads as a result of which bus services between Gunpur-Rayagada as well as R.Udaygiri and Parlakhamundi. The attacks by the maoists have terrorised the local residents as a result of which several shops in many places have remained closed. Police have issued high alert in all the three districts and search operations are on at several places. The police have also intensified search operations in vehicles at several places and are on the look out for any maoists links from any place. Earlier the maoists had blown away a culvert in 2009 during a similar protest while a police van was passing through it due to which 14 jawans were injured severely. So this time the police is taking all possible measures to ensure that the maoists do not have their way and the lives and property of the people residing in the area remain intact.

According to reports two suspected maoists have been arrested by commissionrate police from the S C B Medical in Cuttack. While the police is strictly denying any such reports it is believed that the suspects are currently under treatment in the ENT ward in special cabins under strict vigilance.

There was an encounter between the police and the maoists in West Bengal’s Medinapur district on the 6th of JAN. And it is believed that the two arrested suspects Deben Marandi and Manik Soren were severely injured during the clash. It is also reported that they had also been under treatment in maoists camps for two days, but after their condition deteriorated they are believed to have been shifted to the S C B in fear of being arrested if they go to local hospitals. According to reports three men brought the injured duo to the casualty ward of the S C B and then fled the scene leaving the injured in the hospital. The incident came to limelight after the injured persons failed to give satisfactory answers to the doctors queries about how they had got the injuries. The police suspected foul and informed the local Mangalabag police station and after primary investigations the police is suspecting them to be terrorists.

However both of them have been hit by more than one bullets in their body and now it is believed that the police has shifted them to a private hospital for further treatments.

Such Maoists have mentioned that they want their children to study in schools at the capital city. They might have planted several detonators to blown up schools and colleges but now they seems to be understanding the importance of education and pledging to allow their children to study at schools in Bhubaneswar. Near about 10 rebels lodged in the jail have offered the same statement and they do like to see their children grow strongly.

The rising of Left Wing extremism has always been considered as the lack of development in the backward areas. However, it’s the presence of Maoists group in the Malkangiri that has certainly managed to halt the infrastructure activities in this region for last ten years or so. As the intensity for Maoists activity seems to be higher in the border region of Malkangiri, the proposals for building several bridges has moved for a halt situation. However, these bridges have been planned to build in order to get a better communication and transportation mode with the Andhra Pradesh and Chhattisgarh. If these bridges will be built, then 151 villages of Orissa will draw benefits in this area and these bridges will offer a quality inter-state connectivity for the interim part of Southern Orissa.
